Edward Gregson was born in Sunderland, United Kingdom, in 1945.

He is an English composer. His works include compositions for symphony orchestra, wind band, brass band, brass ensemble and choir, as well as various educational books for wind instruments.

Gregson studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Alan Bush, from 1963 to 1967. He held the position of Professor of Music at Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Currently, he is Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

He is a fellow there, as well as at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music.

Gregson is an academic composer whose work pastiches scores of the 1920s and 1930s, with particular reference to William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

It was announced in May 2008 that Edward Gregson had been commissioned to write the Test Piece for the 2008 British Open Brass Band Championships. Titled 'Rococo Variations,' it is Gregson's first major work for brass band since his 'Of Men and Mountains' from 1991.
