Classical Music hosting links

This page gives you some ideas for hosting your music on the internet. Many of the sites we show are free, but there are also some attractive commercial offerings.

1. Mp3 hosting sites
2. Hosting providers with much diskspace and bandwidth
3. Other sites that offer mp3 hosting
4. Music enthousiasts
5. Public domain/Creative commons
6. Music hosting
7. Free diskspace sites
8. To finish we show some sites with Links and tips

1. Mp3 hosting sites
These are sites that specialize in hosting music, like formerly mp3.com.

Soundclick
A medium size but fast growing music hosting site.

Music.download.com
The official successor to mp3.com. Fast growing.

mp3.com
Mp3.com itself is back in business as a free music hoster too.

Dmusic
Yet another popular music hosting site.

MySpace
A fast growing site. A search for classical returns 6000 artists, but real classical artists (playing composers like Bach, Mozart or Chopin) are probably about 1% of this. With its large space for comments and its lists of friends it reminds me a bit of the good old mp3.com - a real social network.

Rock-industries
A fusion of Dance-Industries and Belgiummp3.

Epitonic
A music hosting site with a very different user interface.

2. Hosting providers with much diskspace and bandwidth
Nowadays you can get quite a lot of diskspace and bandwidth for your money. We selected five of the most popular providers for you:

Midphase

Globat

Lunarpages
Lunarpages

Startlogic
Startlogic

3. Other sites that offer mp3 hosting
These are newspapers, radiostations and other organisations that offer mp3 hosting as a side-line.

Washington Post
Yep. This newspaper has an mp3 section where it hosts local bands. It is quite a nice combination: they can host songs that they write about and in that way keep in touch with the local community.

BBC One music unsigned
Another media company. Hosting your music here gives you a change to get played on BBC radio. They make a selection and post only what they consider the best. I haven't found any classical music here yet.

4. Music enthousiasts

Piano Society
The Piano Society Project was started in August 2004 and is a unique possibility for professional and amateur pianists to promote themselves by sharing their own recordings of classical music.

Whitekeys
Also a piano hosting site.

Organs and organists online
A site for organ enthousiasts that offers the possibility of hosting music. They have more than hundred organ mp3s. Classic Cat does not link to the music hosted here because you can only see what they have after after free registration.

Artist in Residence
Free webhosting for the arts and humanities. You can't host your mp3s here. But you might consider it for your PR website.

5. Public domain/Creative commons
There are numerous initiatives to copy the success of opensource software in the area of music. Until now without much success. Many of those sites are small, get few visitors and are shortliving. Below we list some of the bigger sites. If you are prepared to give the visitors the right to copy the music and give it to others you should consider this option.
The most popular license at the moment is the Creative Commons license. There are different versions of this license. Some give only the right to non-commercial copying, others require only that the name of the musicians is mentioned on the copies and yet others have no requirements at all.

Archive.org
The Internet Archive is well known for storing old versions of webpages. But they have also a music section where they offer to host your music.

Open Music Registry
If you want to share your music without restrictions and allow everyone to copy it you might consider this site. You can list and host here music published under the Open Audio License.

Ibiblio
Ibiblio is the Internet Library, that hosts a lot of free information. At their multimedia section they offer some music too.

Wikipedia Commons
It is a recent trend that more and more music is added to Wikipedia. For big composers like Bach and Beethoven you can now find uploaded music.

Musik Ethos
Musikethos.org is a virtual musical agora and a collection of high quality classical and jazz recordings. Their idea is to use the internet to publish and disseminate free downloads, licensed under Creative Commons.

Thinnerism
A net label with a lot of records. None classical yet.

Our Media
They label themselves as The Global Home for Grassroots Media and say that they provide free storage and bandwidth for media files. "All free; No catches" The site is still in alpha. Nothing classical yet...

6. Music hosting
Unlike the mp3.com clones these sites offer no nice interface. Instead they are directed to the creators of homepages who want to offer music.

Mp3crib

7. Free diskspace sites
Welcome to the Wild West. Many companies offer free diskspace. Usually they want some advertising on your site in return. The problem is that many of those sites are shortliving or are very slow. So try this at your own risk.

FreeWebSpace.net
Freebie List
The Free Site
Free Webspace

8. Links and tips
Below you will find some links to site with hosting tips and/or lists of hosting sites.

Music Biz Academy
Unsigned Band Resources

TheRecordingIndustry.com
Lists of music hosting sites. Nearly all more directed at the garage band as at classical artists. But you may find something that suits you.

Liquid Stereo
A site with lots of tips and articles both to get artists online and to help artists with promotion and making money.
